Winter is my favorite time to travel in the U.S… sometimes I’m looking for a winter wonderland; other times it’s all about the beachy weather!
So without further ado, here are the spots I return again and again for the best of the season.

Best Places to Visit in the USA in December
1. Maui, Hawaii for a Cold Weather Escape
Go to Maui in December for whale watching.
Maui is one of the best places to go on vacation any time of year, but If you’re looking for warm places in the U.S. in December, Maui is ideal! Expect daytime temps in the 80s and mid-60s at night. (I like to go in June for best weather when I’m prepared for crowds.)
As a San Diego native, I’ve been to Maui many times. However, I’d recommend it in December mostly to travelers looking to escape frigid temps elsewhere. The water’s much warmer in spring (but you can still swim!)—and you can get some rain in winter—so only go this month if you’re escaping snow.
One of my favorite activities in Maui to enjoy in December is whale watching. This is the month when humpback whales head to the Auau Channel here from Alaska to birth their young.
Other things to do in Maui?
Spend lots of time on the golden sand beaches near Kihei or Lahaina. Excellent snorkeling is easy to find here. Don’t miss the food trucks!
Or catch the sunrise on Mount Haleakala. (You’ll need reservations ahead of time…or book a guided tour and driver.) Personally, I’ve struck out twice due to fog, however, so if you want to skip the early hour, crowds, and reservations, I say head up mid-day for a nice hike instead.
Drive the stunning Road to Hana to black sand beaches, bamboo forests, and see the rainbow Eucalyptus trees.
On our last visit, we spent three nights in Hana and omigosh our drive south of Hana was filled with epic hikes and waterfalls. Highly recommend!
To maximize beach time, the best place to stay on Maui is in Kihei, Lahaina or at one of the stunning resorts south in Wailea or up north near Kaanapali.
Kaanapali is very popular—it’s beautiful with some wonderful accommodations—but personally, we found it wayyyy windier than, say, Kihei or Wailea, down south and didn’t love our stay there for that reason.
Wondering about December holiday celebrations?
I was so happy to see Lahaina mostly recovered from the fire in 2023 and thriving again (still lots of construction going on, but shops and hotels are open) on our last visit.
And the historic Banyan Tree survived! It’s the largest banyan in the U.S. However, the annual tree lighting ceremony has not yet resumed.
Holiday markets are hopping at Whalers Village in Kaanapali, Wailea, and Makawao. Nick’s Fishmarket and Merriman’s Kapalua make great spots for a Christmas dinner.
Or, attend a Christmas luau…where Santa arrives in a red canoe to surprise children for this traditional Hawaiian feast.
Where to stay in Maui: There are pros and cons to every area…depending on whether you’re looking for swank resorts or family-friendly condos. You can read my complete guide to Maui accommodations with recommended hotels and condos here.

2. Leavenworth, Washington for Bavarian Christmas Vibes
Go here if you’ve always wanted to see the European Christmas markets but haven’t made it yet.
Okay, to be fair, it’s not going to be like the European Christmas markets. You should totally still see those!
But this quaint little Bavarian town, tucked next to the Wenatchee River within the eastern Cascades, about two hrs from Seattle, might be my favorite spot to experience a Christmas wonderland stateside. (The down side: You won’t be the only one. Expect crowds.)
When we went, it felt almost like a theme park. The architecture and art transported us to Germany!
The best time to visit Leavenworth is during the Village of Lights Christmastown Festival, “where it’s Christmas every day in December!”
We were gobsmacked the first time we visited. The village is all decked out for the holidays with fresh evergreen garlands lacing the shops, and half a million colorful lights illuminating Front Street Park.
You’ll hear live holiday music wafting through the air from the gazebo, and snow usually blankets the ground for extra enchantment.
During our time there, we made gingerbread houses, took sleigh rides, and watched all the cute kids enjoying crafts and the story corner. Then it was off for sledding, followed by roasted chestnuts.
If you’re visiting with kids, Santa opportunities abound. They can write letters to and take photos with Santa. See Santas from Around the World.
You’ll find several Christmas-themed shops, a gingerbread factory, a cheese shop, art galleries, and much more—even a nutcracker museum with over 7,000 nutcrackers! See what I mean?
For lunch, my recommendation is to head directly to Munchen Haus where you’ll find different bratwurst choices with warm sauerkraut and an endless variety of mustards. During the winter, they serve a mean glühwein!
Where to stay in Leavenworth: Stay at the Bavarian Lodge right downtown. You can walk wherever you want to go. Plus, your stay comes with cinnamon rolls and egg casseroles for breakfast!

3. Asheville, North Carolina for Christmas Decorations Galore
Go here to see the historic Biltmore Estate dressed to the Nines.
Located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Asheville is a medium-sized town (with a population of just under 100,000). It makes for a great weekend getaway.
I personally love Asheville because a cool city that is also surrounded by gorgeous wilderness.
When I visit, I like to plan time to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park, see the waterfalls in Linville Gorge, and ogle Mount Mitchell (the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River), and Pisgah National Forest!
There are also tons of things to do in Asheville all year round. (It also makes a great August destination in the USA for the summer festivals here.)
Choose from so many critically acclaimed restaurants, craft breweries, museums, and art galleries! I highly recommend swinging by Lexington Glassworks. I bought some gorgeous glass vases there and then ordered custom pendants for my island kitchen online!
December is one of the best times to visit Asheville—especially if you love the sights and sounds of Christmas. Be aware though, that colder winter conditions may make the area’s high-altitude adventures less appealing.
But Christmas! There’s Christmas at the 125,000-acre Biltmore Estate, the largest privately-owned home in America (250 rooms encompassing over 135,000 square feet).
We saw the tree-raising event to kick off the holiday season and then enjoyed a candlelit nighttime tour of the festively decorated rooms of the Biltmore House. It’s gorgeous!
Don’t miss the holiday events at the Antler Hill and the Historic Biltmore Village areas.
But the Biltmore isn’t the only great place to celebrate Christmas in Asheville.
There are also Winter Lights at the North Carolina Arboretum and the National Gingerbread House Competition at the Omni Grove Park Inn.
Bret and Mary | Blue Ridge Mountains Travel Guide
Where to stay in Asheville: The Omni Grove Park Inn, of course! This historic hotel hosts the National Gingerbread Competition, features a world-renowned spa, and has huge roaring fireplaces in the lobby.

4. Austin, Texas for Holiday Lights
Go here this month for 2 million twinklers along the Austin skyline.
The reasons I love Austin? It’s got great weather, a fantastic food scene, and truly vibrant nightlife with live music every night of the week! (Plus, BBQ. OMG could not get enough BBQ.)
And Austin also hosts one of the 10 best public displays of holiday lights in December—The Trail of Lights—in Zilker Park.
This event has been a city tradition for 60 years, bringing together companies, nonprofits, communities, families, couples, and college students alike for a walk beneath its winding twinkling lights.
When we attended, we saw over 2 million Christmas lights; plus over 150 lit-up Christmas trees and installations overlooking the town’s lake and Austin skyline.
Tickets should be purchased in advance. For more information, visit the Austin Trail of Lights website.
Get into the holiday spirit as you walk the 1.25-mile course through the Trail of Lights. It’ll take you about one hour to walk the trail, with various fun family activities along the way.
And when you’re done, hightail it into the many Christmas-themed bars downtown to continue the good time! Yee-ha!
With a free day in Austin, head out to the Texas Hill Country for a half-day guided BBQ and wine-tasting tour.
Mariana | Road Trip Euroguide
Where to stay in Austin: Stay at The Driskill, a gorgeous 19th-century Hyatt hotel. It comes old-world charm and luxe modern amenities in the heart of the city.
5. Savannah, Georgia for Hallmark Magic
Go here in December for the Savannah Christmas Market.
Savannah is one of those Christmas destinations that’s so picturesque it almost resembles a scene straight out of a Hallmark movie (although it also makes a great May vacation in the US when spring blooms!)
The Downtown Neighborhood Association decorates the squares with red ribbons and greenery.
On our Christmas visit, we headed directly to Broughton Street for its festive string lights and massive tree. The vendors along the riverfront set up a bustling German-style Christmas market, too.
One of the best ways to experience Christmas in Savannah, Georgia, is to simply stroll through the Historic District to see the beautiful historic homes decorated in their holiday best.
Our first stop: the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist to see the elaborate annual nativity scene!
Other events we’ve loved the holiday tour of homes, the boat parade, following the gingerbread trail throughout the Historic District, and, of course, the Savannah Christmas Market.
The variety of incredible locally-owned shops is perfect for last-minute shoppers, too.
December weather in Savannah is usually quite comfortable, with temperatures often climbing to the upper 60s or low 70s during the day.
Pack a jacket and gloves in case evening strolls down River Street turn breezy.
Where to stay in Savannah: Stay at The Marshall House, a beautiful 19th-century boutique hotel in the heart of Savannah’s Historic District. Includes evening wine and cheese reception.

6. Park City, Utah for Snow
Go to Park City in December for a white Christmas.
This famous ski town hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002.
You can still visit the Utah Olympic Park and imagine the athletes’ training there, and you can even take a ride down the bobsled track yourself if you dare!
When we visited, we saved money on a pricey ski trip pass with the Ikon Pass (valid at Deer Valley—skiers only). The Epic Pass is another option as it’s good at Park City Mountain Resort, the largest ski resort in North America.
Either way, these passes make Park City one of the most affordable skiing options in Utah.
Other highlights of our visit included Snowfest at Park City Mountain, where Santa comes to town via ski lift. The annual torchlight parade down the mountain was also fun to be a part of. If you stay for New Year’s Eve, there’s even fireworks!
You can also take a ride on Heber Valley Railroad’s North Pole Express, which is especially popular among families with young kids. Or book a private guided snowshoe excursion away from crowds.
Park City’s Main Street is dotted with giant snow globes and holiday decorations and full of festive bars, excellent restaurants, art galleries, and holiday entertainment.
Where to stay in Park City: Planning a family getaway or ski retreat with friends? Book Adobe at Powder Watch, a cozy, luxurious mountain dream on the “Gold Coast”, just a 3-minute walk to Main Street.

7. Death Valley National Park for Desert Bliss
Go here in December for hikes in gorgeous weather.
Death Valley is one of the best national parks in the United States to visit during December. (It also makes a great destination in spring, though.)
Well known as the “hottest place on Earth”, the world record for the highest air temperature (a scorching 134°F!) was recorded at aptly named Furnace Creek in Death Valley.
During the summer, temperatures in the park frequently top 120°F and don’t drop below the mid-90s overnight.
But in December, when we visited, the weather was much more pleasant, with average highs in the mid-60s and average lows in the upper-30s at the lower elevations.
Death Valley features an enormous range of elevation, from 282 feet below sea level at Badwater Basin to over 11,000 feet at Telescope Peak, the tallest point in the park.
At higher elevations, temperatures are colder, and snow is not uncommon in December.
Milder December temperatures made it easy to enjoy hiking the Golden Canyon and Gower Gulch Loop (6.4 miles, 1000 feet elevation gain). Hiking is one of the very best things to do in Death Valley this month!
On our trip, we explored the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, visited the Badwater Basin Salt Flats (the lowest point in North America), and spent a night camping at the Panamint Sand Dunes.
Where to stay in Death Valley: The Inn at Death Valley is inside Death Valley National Park. It’s a beautiful property with a pool and excellent food on-site…ideal for a couple’s getaway.

8. Aspen, Colorado for a Winter Wonderland
Go here this month for epic skiing, snowboarding, and hot springs.
Aspen is a tony winter wonderland in the heart of Colorado’s Rockies during December.
A trip from Denver to Aspen is about three hours via Interstate 70 and is by far one of the most popular road trips from the Mile High City.
Our December visit included lots of skiing and snowboarding, not to mention a sleigh ride through the town’s streets and ice skating!
If you want to really feel the Christmas spirit, Aspen cannot be beat!
As a bonus, you can also visit some of the best hot springs in Colorado if you are willing to take a 1.5-hour trip to some of the nearby towns. My favorites? Iron Mountain Hot Springs and Glenwood Hot Springs Pool.
Plus, the city boasts many lovely bars and restaurants if you’re looking for your hot chocolate fix.
Where to stay in Aspen: Gathering the family? Make memories at “Above It All”, a beautiful four-bedroom ski-in home with iconic views of Aspen’s most famous mountain peaks.

9. Arches National Park, Utah for Dark Sky Stargazing
Go to Arches in December if you hate crowds but love hiking and mountain biking.
Head directly to Arches National Park in Utah! Winter is divine here, mainly because the crowds of summer, spring, and fall are long gone.
It’s the perfect time to see the Mighty 5 (Bryce, Arches, Zion, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks).
When visiting Arches National Park in December, you will probably have the place all to yourself, except for the week in between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Many of the hiking trails in Arches National Park remain open year-round. We headed directly to popular spots like Delicate Arch and Devil’s Garden…crowd-free!
We were particularly wowed by our stargazing here at the Balanced Rock Picnic Area—The Windows, the Garden of Eden Viewpoint, and Panorama Point are also great—thanks to lower light pollution from guests at this time of year.
Just be aware that it’s chilly this time of year! With daily highs in the 40s (°F) and overnight lows in the 20s, expect snow to accumulate quickly on the ground.
And while it looks lovely, snow can obscure trail markers and make the ground incredibly slippery.
Therefore, it’s always a good idea to bring traction devices, such as trekking poles, and to dress in warm layers.
You’ll also want to bring plenty of sunscreen and water on any of your hikes since the elevation at Arches National Park is over 5,000 feet.
That means humidity is lower and sweat evaporates more quickly. As a result, you may not appreciate how much moisture you’re losing while exploring the park.
Jamie | Photo Jeepers
Where to stay at Arches National Park: Nearby Moab makes the best base as there are no lodgings inside the park. If you’re planning a hiking adventure for a group, stay at Moab Springs Ranch, a two-bedroom luxury townhome with a loft that sleeps eight. It’s a great value!
10. Orlando, Florida for Memory Making
Go here in December for a Disney Christmas.
Orlando, Florida, offers perfect weather and an abundance of Christmas activities without the snow for your holiday adventure.
You’ll enjoy mostly clear skies, low humidity, and cooler weather.
Unlike the summer months, you can still wear shorts but avoid the daily rainstorms and possibility of a hurricane. Plan for high temps in the 70s and 80s and lows in the 50s and 60s.
We found soo many fun Christmas things to do in Orlando in December.
We started, of course, at Disney World, which goes completely overboard with Christmas decorations and events. (You can check upcoming events here.) Then we headed to Disney Springs for the Christmas tree stroll (free).
Next up: We were off to the Grand Floridian to ogle the massive Christmas tree and huge gingerbread house.
Depending on when in December you visit, you can also enjoy the different parades, including boat parades.
Find “snow” at some of the Christmas events and then take a stroll around Lake Eola, as we did for the Christmas light display and Orlando Christmas tree.
Where to stay in Orlando: Heading to Disney World? Stay at Buena Vista Suites Orlando. Just a 3-minute drive to the park, it also includes a complimentary breakfast and scheduled transportation to skip the drive.

11. San Diego, California for Crazy Winter Sunsets
Go here in December to see the Parade of Boats.
Spending December in San Diego makes for a great winter escape plan. I’ve lived here 30 years, so I have tons of experience exploring the very best events.
The weather in San Diego during December is mild, with average daytime highs around the mid-60s, and will still require a sweater or sweatshirt as it becomes chilly in the evenings.
These temperatures, while comfortably mild, can make it a bit too cold to try all of the fun San Diego water sports, a great excuse to come back in the summer!
Whales can be spotted all year long in San Diego; however, mid-December to mid-March is the best time to take a tour.
Sunsets during this time of year are particularly colorful—you could watch from Sunset Cliffs or even book a sunset sailing experience!
My favorites as a local? Head north for the Encinitas holiday parade. And definitely do not miss December Nights at gorgeous Balboa Park (near San Diego’s famous zoo). Expect crowd,s though.
It’s the largest free holiday festival in the city and is on for two days only, so check dates for this year here.
For my kids, who grew up here, driving the Del Mar Fairgrounds Snow-N-Glow was a Christmas ritual. There are more than 1 million twinkling lights!
It wouldn’t be Christmas in San Diego without the annual Boat Parade of Lights! For the best vantage point, park yourself along the waterfront of Shelter Island, Harbor Island, or the Embarcadero. Seaport Village is also a good spot!
Another really wonderful experience is walking the San Diego Botanic Garden’s holiday lightscape (also in Encinitas). This lovely event is now four years running, and it’s just so fun to wander the dazzling, dressed-up gardens.
Think: lively music, festive cocktails, and seasonal bites. But reserve tickets early!
Need more to do? Day trip to Julian for snow!
Where to stay in San Diego: See my post on the top 10 San Diego vacation rentals here. La Jolla is also a great option!

12. New York City for New Year’s Eve
Go to NYC in December if you’ve always wanted to do the countdown at Time Square!
New York City is a dream destination for many worldwide, but I can tell you, based on my own visits, it’s even more magical in December!
If you’ve ever watched the Times Square countdown on TV at New Year’s Eve, you’ll definitely want to be here in person for the big event.
One of my favorite NYC activities this month is strolling through snowy Central Park; it’s a wonder late in the day with the crowds gone.
I always make time for ice skating at the Rockefeller Center and seeing the famous Christmas tree all lit up. There are so many great things to do in New York in December.
Choose from the Christmas Markets at Bryant Park and Union Square Market. (I always get the hot mulled cider!) And I adore the Christmas light show that Saks Fifth Avenue puts on nightly this time of year!
New York City has also been named the City that Never Sleeps, and it’s especially true this month. The city really comes alive at night.
Watch the lights show at Dyker Heights and Fifth Avenue, or enjoy a winter-themed Nutcracker show on Broadway.
December in New York is when the festivities are at their liveliest, the city is covered in snow, and the buzzing energy of New York is at its peak.
Where to stay in NYC: Stay in the heart of the city at The Refinery in Manhattan if you’re looking for a quintessential NYC vibe. It’s a 10-minute walk to Times Square.

13. Marco Island, Florida for Resort Life
Go here this month if Christmas on the beach is your idea of a stellar holiday.
Nestled along Florida’s southwest coast at the gateway to the Florida Everglades is Marco Island, one of my very favorite places to visit in the winter months, especially December.
As the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands, Marco is well-traveled. It is just minutes from the Everglades, and the shallow waterways surrounding the countless barrier islands are just begging to be explored.
We love Marco Island this time of year, especially for the mild weather; the daily high temps are 75 to 85 degrees (°F) with very little humidity.
Snowbirds have not yet arrived, and the island gears up for unique holiday celebrations.
One of our favorite things to do is to watch the festive Marco Island boat parade; You’ll see boats of all sizes decorated with lights and playing Christmas music for all to hear!
There are plenty of things to do in Marco Island for outdoor lovers, from kayak and boat tours to a thrilling airboat ride.
Looking for even more fun options? Marco’s sister city—Naples, Florida—is just minutes away.
But Marco is a great destination even if your ideal vacation involves little more than the beach, sun, and poolside umbrella drinks.
There are plenty of luxury resorts, such as JW Marriott and Marriott Crystal Shores, which line the beach here and offer all that, along with breathtaking sunset views of the Gulf of Mexico.
Where to stay on Marco Island: If you’re gathering with family, stay in your own private condo with sunset views…directly on the beach.

14. Chicago, Illinois for the Christkindlmarket
Go to Chicago in December for ice skating, spectacular lights, and classic Christmas theater.
I lived six years in Chicago, so when I tell you it’s a winter wonderland with unique holiday traditions, I know what I’m talking about.
The Christkindlmarket is an authentic German Christmas market and is one of the most popular things to do in Chicago in winter.
It’s down the street from Millennium Park and the city’s official holiday tree. On Friday evenings, the park is filled with music during the Holiday Sing-a-Long.
Even Scrooge lets the Bah Humbugs go at Goodman Theatre’s A Christmas Carol, and Joffrey Ballet reimagines a classic with its version of The Nutcracker.
There’s nothing like ice skating with the city skyline as your backdrop. There’s a rink in Millennium Park and a skating ribbon in Maggie Daley Park.
North Michigan Avenue is strewn with lights from the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival.
While the festival takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving, the decorations continue through the winter.
Another favorite tradition is Christmas Around the World and Holiday of Lights at the Museum of Science and Industry.
The museum’s entrance is filled with trees decorated to represent Chicago’s many ethnic communities.
During Lincoln Park ZooLights, the zoo is lit up with millions of lights, and you can even visit Santa Claus.
These are just a few of the reasons Chicago is a magical place to visit, so bundle up and plan a trip to the Windy City.
Where to stay in Chicago: Looking for the perfect base in the city? Stay in the heart of the city at gorgeous Level Chicago, a sustainable contemporary property with your own kitchen. Michigan Avenue and the Museum of Contemporary Art are close!

15. Mammoth Lakes, California for Winter Adventures
Go to Mammoth in December for skiing, snowshoeing, and hot springs.
Tucked away in California’s eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, Mammoth Lakes, an adorable ski town, is the perfect place to visit this month, due to its endless opportunities for outdoor winter adventures.
I’ve been here for a number of winter visits, as it’s an easy six-hour drive from my home in San Diego.
Looking for great skiing? Head to Mammoth Mountain or June Mountain.
The slopes are usually covered in incredible powder during December, and the dramatic Sierra Nevadas provide an unforgettable backdrop.
You’ll also enjoy fantastic cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at the neighboring Inyo National Forest.
And after all that playing in the snow, we always warm up at one of Mammoth’s incredible natural hot springs to soak our aching muscles, like Wild Willy’s Hot Spring, where you can relax and take in the surrounding snow-capped mountains.
While Mammoth attracts most of its winter visitors for its slopes, there’s still plenty of holiday spirit to enjoy.
The town’s largest outdoor shopping area, the Village at Mammoth Lakes, is decorated with countless Christmas lights throughout the season.
We love the annual tree lighting, and kids love visits from Santa that are scheduled leading up to Christmas.
Where to stay in Mammoth: A ski-in ski-out hideaway in the woods, of course! This upscale 2-bedroom, 2.5-bath sleeps seven. With a wood-burning fireplace and 30 feet of glass-to-mountain views, you’ll slip right into vacation mode.

16. Nantucket, Massachusetts for the Craft Fair
Go to Nantucket for a Christmas island vibe.
Only one word can describe Nantucket in December, and it’s magical. To celebrate the holiday season, Nantucket pulls out all the stops to dress up the town.
Dozens of Christmas trees are put up and decorated along the streets of downtown, and they all light up every night at dusk to create a warm, festive glow while you shop.
A giant wreath is hung on Brand Point Lighthouse, creating the perfect backdrop for Christmas card photos.
We loved perusing the more than 50 trees by local artists and businesses. They were individually decorated and displayed inside the Whaling Museum for all to enjoy.
And it’s not quite Christmas on Nantucket until the famous dory boat on Easy Street has put up its own iconic little tree on the water!
Our favorite time to head to Nantucket is the first weekend of December for the official Nantucket Christmas Stroll. Santa arrives at the wharf on a boat with the U.S. Coast Guard, and restaurants host cookie decorating and wine tasting events.
Talented residents present concerts as artists and crafters come together to put on the Yuletide Craft Fair. Children can write and send letters to Santa at the special North Pole mailbox downtown.
A day trip to Nantucket in December is guaranteed to fill your heart with Christmas cheer!
Where to stay in Nantucket: Nestled into a quiet street in the historic district, the Seven Sea Street Inn is in the very best part of Nantucket. Guests rave about the homemade breakfasts here.

17. Phoenix, Arizona for Sunshine
Go to Phoenix this month for garden lights and a celebration of native cultures.
If you’re looking for amazing weather when it’s downright freezing in most of the rest of the country, head to Phoenix!
The average high temperature in Phoenix during December is about 70°F, making it perfect for outdoor activities like hiking—and getting to see Christmas lights in warmer temperatures!
We love Phoenix this month for its Desert Botanical Garden; it’s adorned with thousands of sparkling Christmas lights during the annual Las Noches de las Luminarias festival.
Live music, food, and hot apple cider complete the experience.
One of the best indoor activities in Phoenix around Christmastime is to visit the Heard Museum’s Holidays at the Heard event.
The museum celebrates the spirit of the holidays and native cultures.
Our favorite spot for holiday ice skating in Phoenix? Head to the lovely outdoor rink at the CityScape shopping complex.
You’ll find lots of great dining options here, too, after skating.
Where to stay in Phoenix: Heading to Phoenix for some sun? Stay in this beautiful one-bedroom townhome in the historic Roosevelt neighborhood, within walking distance of all that downtown Phoenix has to offer.
Check the price and availability of the one-bedroom townhome here.

18. Boston, Massachusetts for the New Year’s Eve Arts Festival
Visit Boston to dine in a heated igloo.
We head to Boston in December for festive markets, outdoor ice skating, and cozy igloos…Yes, igloos!
But you gotta be ready for winter weather! December daytime temperatures often hover around freezing. (If you’re lucky, you could get milder weather in the 50s (°F).)
Snow is more common in January and February, but a winter wonderland cityscape isn’t out of the question for Boston in December!
My favorite Boston activity this month is ice skating on Frog Pond at Boston Common.
Then it’s up to The Lookout Rooftop at The Envoy in the Seaport for harbor views.
You can rent a heated igloo there for dinner—one of the best date ideas in Boston if you’re looking for a romantic getaway.
Swing by Copley Square to see the giant menorah. And don’t miss the giant Christmas tree on the Common and the one at Faneuil Hall!
I love the winter holiday markets at City Plaza Government Center, the craft fair at the Old South Church at Copley Square, and the SoWa Winter Festival.
If you come to Boston at the end of December, you can enjoy the oldest and largest New Year’s Eve arts festival in the entire United States!
First Night is billed as Boston’s biggest New Year’s Eve party. It’s a massive celebration with fireworks and music.
Where to stay in Boston: Stay at The Godfrey Hotel in the Theater District. With an on-site restaurant and city center location, you can walk wherever you want to go.

19. Oahu, Hawaii to Surf on Christmas
Go to Oahu for the Big Wave Competition on the North Shore.
Can I share a little secret? I’ve been to every Hawaiian island multiple times, but I think Oahu is my favorite!
That surprised me because before visiting, I thought it would just feel like a crowded city. But let me tell you…Honolulu is just one small part of this island. Oahu has it all…from gorgeous beaches, sea turtles galore, the best nightlife in Hawaii, an excellent dining scene, and so so much more. I highly recommend it.
Temperatures in December range from a high of 80°F to a low of 70°F, so it’s rarely too hot or cold for anyone’s liking.
There are tons of great things to do in Oahu, including sightseeing, relaxing, and hiking.
You can also enjoy water sports like jet skiing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, surfing, and more.
The whale watching season in Oahu generally runs from December to May. This is when the whales like to come to the warm waters of Hawaii to breed and give birth.
You can sometimes see whales with the naked eye from shore, or you can try to get a closer look with a whale-watching tour or boat charter.
Whale sightings are almost guaranteed if you come in the right season, and it’s an amazing experience!
And December is a great time to head to the North Shore to see the Big Wave Riders compete. We stayed just across the street and happened to wander over to the Women’s final in the surfing championships. It was an amazing experience!
The North Shore food truck scene is also on point!
Where to stay on Oahu: We loved our stay in Ko Olina at the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club. With a private beach, family-friendly and adults-only pools, you can’t beat the views here!

20. Burlington, Vermont for the Polar Express
Visit Burlington this month for an experience right out of the famous children’s book.
Why do we head to Burlington in December? This time of year, the city is often covered in a stunning blanket of snow, AND it overlooks majestic Lake Champlain. Hello, winter wonderland!
Lake Champlain is a very large lake that freezes over in December, allowing eager visitors to ice skate and ice fish to their heart’s content.
However, we also take some time to explore the city itself; Church Street dazzles this time of year with vibrant holiday lights and festive store windows
But our favorite experience? Hopping aboard the Polar Express for an impromptu train ride to the North Pole.
Guests on the Polar Express are encouraged to wear their pajamas, and expert chefs dole out homemade cookies and hot chocolate on the trip. What could be more festive than that?
Then, after we’ve enjoyed a special reading of the Polar Express children’s book, we typically head back into Burlington to watch the Santa Parade and enjoy the annual tree lighting; it’s all part of a romantic getaway in Vermont.
Where to stay in Burlington: Stay at Hotel Vermont Burlington in central Burlington. This modern hotel is filled with contemporary artwork and provides free yoga classes. Church Street Marketplace is just a 10-minute walk away.

21. Palm Springs, California for Awesome Day Trips
Head to Palm Springs in December for easy visits to both the snow and the desert.
California in December is gorgeous! It’s a wonderful month to plan a trip to Palm Springs.
While there are lots of things to do in Palm Springs year-round, you’ll enjoy absolutely gorgeous weather in December, with daytime highs in the low 70s (°F).
We visit this month for hiking to the many oases in the area.
And then, we’ll either day trip to nearby Joshua Tree National Park (the Joshua Trees are sooo cool…Remember the cover of the iconic U2 album by the same name? I date myself!). Or we’ll head to Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Closer to the city, the hiking at Thousand Palms Oasis or Indian Canyons is excellent, too!
Downtown Palm Springs always looks festive, with the palms lining the main street wrapped in lights, but in December, you’ll find holiday decorations everywhere.
On early December visits, we love to attend the Festival of Lights Parade, with its it-up floats, marching bands, and flashy cars.
Tree lighting ceremonies happen in many resorts and at the Aerial Tramway Valley Station. This is one of my very favorite Palm Springs experiences in December because you go from the desert to the snow in just 20 minutes!
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in nearby Palm Desert also has a WildLights celebration.
Some neighborhoods feature amazing displays of holiday lights, so it’s worth driving around to take in the holiday magic.
Palm Springs is known for its dining scene, and December is no exception. Enjoy holiday seasonal menus at area restaurants and share a toast with holiday-themed cocktails.
In fact, there are eight Michelin restaurants here! And many won’t break the bank either. Try Bar Cecil, 4 Saints or Tac/Quila for Mexican!
Where to stay in Palm Springs: Make your Palm Springs base in a contemporary mid-century home, complete with swimming pool and spa. Two master bedrooms + a den sleep six.

22. Duluth, Minnesota for Sleigh Rides
Visit Duluth this month for cozy Christmas experiences.
Though the weather may be cold, Duluth, Minnesota becomes a magical winter wonderland in December. It’s one of our favorite times to visit.
Located right on the shores of Lake Superior, the city sure knows how to make the holidays special, even in freezing temperatures.
We always swing through downtown Bayfront Festival Park; the Bentleyville Tour of Lights shines bright with over 4 million Christmas lights and displays.
I’m all in on the free event…which also includes free hot cocoa, cookies, and s’mores!
Next stop for us? It’s the Glensheen Mansion. This is the time of year to tour this beautiful place to enjoy the grounds all decked out for the holidays.
Then it’s on to the horse-drawn sleigh rides in Canal Park. I love watching the twinkling lights and listening to the waves crash around me on Lake Superior.
Children love rides on the Christmas City Express (also offering free cookies and cocoa), not to mention holiday tunes and a fantastic train ride up the shore of the lake.
For adventure lovers, Spirit Mountain is the perfect spot to hit the slopes for some of the best skiing in the Midwest.
Most don’t think of Minnesota as a place to visit in the winter, but Duluth shows magic and beauty all year, especially in the month of December.
Where to stay in Duluth: Gather at the historic Pumphouse, an iconic home directly on Lake Superior. With period chandeliers, it’s a stunning French-style home.

23. Coastal Mississippi for the Lights Festival
Go to Coastal Mississippi in December for warm weather and Christmas on the water.
While every month of the year is a wonderful time to visit, December in Coastal Mississippi is quite special.
Gulfport Harbor Lights Festival is a phenomenal holiday light show featuring over 1.5 million lights. We usually opt for the heated trolley ride, but you can also walk this show.
Jones Park is also taken over by Santa’s Village (bring letters for Santa), carnival rides, and holiday treats, and is it even Christmas without snapping a few pics at the elfie selfie stations?
The festival is open from late November through December 31 and was highlighted in Lifetime’s Christmas in Mississippi holiday movie.
Coastal Mississippi communities are full of festive events this month. We usually hop from one to the other to catch the Christmas on the Water Boat Parade (Biloxi), Snowflakes in the Bay (Bay St. Louis), and Downtown for the Holidays (Pascagoula).
See the Bay St. Louis Christmas parade and stop in at Ocean Springs for Christmas tree lighting and an open house.
The weather here is mild so you can also visit this month to run the Mississippi Gulf Coast Marathon or enjoy ice skating at MS Coast Coliseum.
Final tip: Stay for New Year’s Eve and bring in the new year at Coastal Mississippi’s Oyster Drop, their fun version of NYC’s crystal ball drop.
Where to stay in Biloxi: The Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort is just a 5-minute drive from Biloxi Beach and includes an on-site miniature golf course and heated pool in the Garden Oasis.

24. Washington, DC for the Tree Lighting
Head to Washington, D.C. in December for the Capitol all decked out.
Washington DC is one of the most festive places to visit in December, and many of the best holiday activities in DC are free…which is why we like to visit this month.
The month starts with the unveiling of the Capitol Christmas Tree and the White House Christmas Tree; these are lit nightly throughout the month.
At the U.S. Botanical Garden, we love to check out the elaborate model train display that honors sites all over the country.
The garden is also decorated with beautiful poinsettias and recreations of famous DC monuments and memorials, all created from natural elements.
Then it’s usually off to see the sparkling Christmas trees and giant wreaths that adorn Union Station and the Library of Congress.
December in DC is generally chilly, and the city often experiences an early winter snowstorm so dress accordingly!
Sledding on Capitol Hill is such a fun way to celebrate a snowfall. and happy gatherings organized by the DC Snowball Fight Association.
As long as the weather cooperates, you can ice skate for a small fee at outdoor rinks at the National Sculpture Garden and Washington Harbor.
Shoppers can head to the Downtown DC Holiday Market and Smithsonian Museums to find unique gifts for everyone on their holiday list.
And the many monuments on the National Mall remain open every day, including Christmas Day, and are beautifully lit at night.
Where to stay in Washington, D.C.: Stay at the Dupont Circle Hotel, just minutes from the mall and all the best historical landmarks. Large windows, marble bathrooms, and farm-to-table restaurants bring your experience alive.

25. Kennebunkport, Maine for New England Cheer
Head here this month for one of the best Christmas towns in America.
Oh Kennebunkport! Of course it’s celebrated for beautiful beaches in the summertime and charming fall foliage, but nothing quite compares to visiting this seaside town in southern Maine after the snow starts to fall!
We like to arrive for “Christmas Prelude” during the first two weekends in December. That’s when it all begins to come to life.
Head directly to the port (known as the Port of Kennebunk, or Kennebunkport) for enchanting light displays.
You’ll also find an enormous Christmas tree covered in buoys and lobster pots, in addition to fireworks, tree lighting ceremonies, an exciting hat parade, and seemingly endless mulled wine and hot cocoa tents.
Often rated as one of the best Christmas towns in America, you can even choose and cut down your own Christmas tree!
Wintertime in Maine can get a bit chilly, but occasionally you will be treated to beautiful snow flurries or even a full winter blanket of snow.
Where to stay in Kennebunkport: Walk to galleries, shops, and restaurants when you gather your group in a beautiful private home in this prime location. It’s dog-friendly too!

26. San Juan, Puerto Rico for Balmy Temps
Head to San Juan in December to taste Coquito.
Vacationers looking for a warm-weather December escape need look no further than sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico. If you’re on the East Coast and looking for a beachy December getaway, this is the place!
This US territory is located in the Caribbean and enjoys balmy tropical temperatures year-round, with December averages in the mid-80s (°F) for the daily highs and mid-70s for the daily lows.
You’ll want to base in Puerto Rico’s historical center, Old San Juan, as we did. It’s very walkable.
Stroll along the picturesque El Paseo del Morro National Recreational Trail, with views of the imposing fortified city walls on one side and the azure waters of the harbor on the other.
Visit San Juan’s well-preserved forts, Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal—the largest Spanish fort in the New World.
Puerto Rico’s holiday season is quite extensive, commencing after Thanksgiving and continuing through the middle of January.
Enjoy the holiday lights decorating the city and the holiday boat parade in the San Juan Harbor.
Be sure to sample some coquito—it’s the traditional Christmas drink of the island. (Is there anything better than a coquito on the beach in December?)
This is Puerto Rico’s holiday alternative to eggnog, featuring coconut milk or cream of coconut, with a dash of spices and a splash of white rum. ¡Salud!
Where to stay in Puerto Rico: Stay in a private villa by the beach at Villa Athena. Featuring a kitchen, it’s on the grounds of the fabulous Bahia Beach Resort and includes the use of a golf cart!

27. Portsmouth, New Hampshire for the Candlelight Stroll.
Head to Portsmouth now for small-town Christmas ambiance.
If you’re looking for a New England Christmas wonderland, visit New Hampshire!
This underrated state in New England is home to charming small towns, country roads, sapphire lakes, and forested mountains.
Portsmouth is a small, funky seaside city in New Hampshire, but let me tell you…it goes all out in December.
We love the Candlelight Stroll! It takes place all month long at the Strawbery Banke Museum on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
This “living museum” recreates one of the oldest neighborhoods in New England, complete with restored historic homes and costumed role-playing guides.
The Candlelight Stroll brings glowing lanterns, 19th-century-style Christmas decorations, and even ice skating performances! An experience that truly brings the best of the holiday to life.
But Portsmouth is just one of many great spots in New Hampshire in December.
If you love small towns at Christmas time, also check out the Monadnock region in southwest New Hampshire.
The towns of Jaffrey Center, Peterborough, Keene, and Walpole, with their decorated farmhouses and old-fashioned town squares, look like snow globes come to life!
Finish with a sleigh ride at Stonewall Farm in Keene.
It’s easily one of the best things to do in New Hampshire in the winter, especially when combined with a stop at L.A. Burdick Chocolates in nearby Walpole, home to the best hot chocolate in New Hampshire.
Where to stay in Portsmouth: Stay at the Silver Fountain Inn for world-class service. This elegant, three-story Victorian B&B is right downtown!
